Question:

Jocomet????

can anyone tell me the origin of the surname Jocomet. (I think it sounds french)

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: I did a wildcard search on Castlegarden.org, which is the passenger lists for the Port of New York before Ellis Island opened. It appears there were two instances where the Jacomet family came to the US. First in 1842 (one person) and then in 1891 a family of six entered the US. One came from France, the others from Switzerland.

First name Last name Occupation Age Sex Arrived Origin Ship
P. Jacomet Cook 23 M 19 May 1842 France America
A. Jacomet Child, Youngster 7 M 2 Mar 1891 Switzerland La Champagne
Barbara Jacomet Child, Youngster 10 F 2 Mar 1891 Switzerland La Champagne
Jacob Jacomet Farmer 35 M 2 Mar 1891 Switzerland La Champagne
Joohann Jacomet Child, Youngster 5 M 2 Mar 1891 Switzerland La Champagne
Marie Jacomet Child, Youngster 9 F 2 Mar 1891 Switzerland La Champagne
Theresa Jacomet Child, Youngster 11 F 2 Mar 1891 Switzerland La Champagne

Ellis Island had one immigrant from Switzerland with that same surname. The beauty there is that you have a town to work from. In Switzerland, families located in one small area. They didn't move around too much...travel was difficult for all but 5 months of the year. And for those five months, they were expected to work in their communes.

First Name: Anna Marie
Last Name: Jacomet
Ethnicity: Switserland, German
Last Place of Residence: Javetsch, Switserland
Date of Arrival: Nov 26, 1920
Age at Arrival: 31y Gender: F Marital Status: S
Ship of Travel: Kroonland
Port of Departure: Antwerp
Manifest Line Number: 0003

The reason for the strange spelling and the names like Johann is probably that they were on one of the lines between the French and German speaking areas of Switzerland...there were only a few. But as the country unified and the politics ironed out, you have an intermingling of the two languages.

Hope it helps. Let me know if you need anything.
