Question:

Salsburg????

What does the surname salsburg mean in yiddish and/or hebrew. I ask because my great grandmother was a jew with this last name and she was from Russia.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Nothing, it's German. Okay, yiddish is derived from German but the name is german and means 'salt castle'.
The most likely origin is the city of Salzburg in Austria or the surrounding province of the same name. The "Salt" castle controlled that part of the Salzach river and took tax from all the barges carrying salt down it, hence the name.
I assume the name ended up in Russia after one of the various expulsions of Jews from Europe.
The different spelling of sals and salz is not unusual, but prove useful in determining when your Salsburg ancestor got the name.
