Question:

How do I find the names of people in the civil war prisons like Andersonville?

I want to look at the names of people in the Civil War prisons and see if they are my ancestors.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: (If you add to or edit your original question to include your relative's name, I can search for info. at ancestry.com for you. They do have some Andersonville info. on the site, but you have to have a subscription to use the site.)

Funny that you should ask this question....I am presently showing the TNT movie "Andersonville" to my students.

You can check to see if you had any relatives at Andersonville by going to: http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/prisoners.ht...

If you don't find your relative at the above part of the National Park Service Database, check at: http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.cfm... At this site, you can look for both Confederate and Union soldiers and do not need to know which side they fought on.

You can even search the 'Regiments' and find out where they went throughout the Civil War. This way you might find out what battles your relative participated in, etc.

(A few minutes ago the National Park Service sites listed above said 'error'. It is working now, but maybe it was overloaded due to Memorial Day weekend? These are up-to-date website addresses.)

Henry Wirz, the commandant of Andersonville was the only Confederate soldier executed for war crimes. http://www.law.umkc.edu/faculty/projects...
