Question:

Records of Conscripted soldiers during American civil War?

My GG grandfather was working on paddle steamer during the civil war. He and his fellow workers were made fight for the Confederates. I was wondering if there are any records of conscriptees/ or POWs he ended up being caught by the otherside before he got to fight (luckily for him).

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: There sure are records. They're in the custody of the National Archives and Record Administration's Military Records unit in St. Louis MO. Many have also been transcribed and are included in Ancestry.com's Military records package. You can get help researching them by contacting a group called Sons of Confederate Veterans.
