How do you look up family back ground without paying for it?

I have my grandfathers name date of birth and death and where he was born, And that is where it stops I have his fathers first two letters of his first name same last.I can' go back any further. And these web sites that want you to pay can't give me what I already have there a rip off. I stumbled on what I have by looking up my grand fathers military record and it gave me his draft card that gave me his date of birth and his place of birth and I was way off on where I thought he was from and from that I got his date and place of birth and social security number and thats where I am . I want to go further back any help out there

That doesn't cost me they are rip off they don't have as much as I do. But will put the inf out there to see if any body can find anything

OK this is what I have. Samuel Ruby McKnight, May 10 1900 at Prince George Virgina died Jan 1983 in sulfur Okla. His father was C.A. McKnight of Hopewell VG.
