After going through all the Dutch to America passenger records, this is literally the only one that seems plausible...unless you think he might have gone through Canada and walked over sometime later. One reason I'm encouraged by this record is that Peter came over as a toddler. He should have shown up on half a dozen censuses between 1860-1920...but he doesn't. There's no marriage record that I've found on him yet. So I think we're looking at an abbreviated spelling of the name from the original.

OK, we're at the beginning of the Civil Registers for Utrecht. The marriages of Maria/Hermanus and Pieter/Maria Henrietta predate the civil registers. There are other avenues to take to track them down, but it can't be done in a few hours on the internet. But the records do exist, particularly land records and wills. The Utrecht Archives is a wonderful place to research. Here's a link that will help get you started: http://www.genlias.nl/en/page2207.jsp...

You'll also have to figure out at this point if they were Catholic or Protestant. If they were Protestant, this is the place to start: http://www.newutrechtchurch.org/archive....
If they were Catholic, you'll have to first try the LDS to see if they have parish records for Utrecht, and if not, you'll have to contact the parishes in that town (as opposed to the province) to request baptismal, marriage and sepulchre (death) records. Unlike the US, the Dutch didn't get married in churches, always in a civil ceremony. But then they went for a blessing of the marriage. So dates will be off a little in most cases, but you're in the ballpark.

**Re: Pieter van Leunen and Maria Henrietta Schneider... Lack of other children for this couple makes me wonder if one or the other didn't die young. But I haven't found a death record for them.

***BTW, they weren't "Black Dutch"...just plain old Dutch with fair skin and pretty eyes from Utrecht, the center of the country. They might have been Catholic or might have been Dutch Reformed...you'll be able to figure that out quickly when you find baptismal records for the kids born in the US and the burial plots for Gerard and Catharine.

Here's a bit from the Kenton Co GenWeb project.

I'm not 100% sure this is Mary's parents, but pull the marriage license and see...
