Question:

Im looking for Skrzyosow, Austria.?

My grandmother was born here, in 1890 or so. She died in 1927-1928. My father was 7 years old. I'm trying to find out my grandmothers birthday, and people. Thank you for any help. Beth Verneris

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Try the "Shtetl Seeker" at http://www.jewishgen.org/shtetlseeker/lo... Do a search by spelling the town the way you did in your query and make sure the "Search Method" shows "Sounds like Daitch-Mokotoff Soundex"

There is no town spelled this way, but at least 5 other possibles...Skrzyszew and Skrzysz㳷 - In reality there are 4 towns spelled "Skrzysz㳷".

Skrzyszew 51ⰵ1' 22ⰲ9' 68.8 miles ESE of Warsaw
Skrzysz㳷 51ⰱ8' 20ⰲ5' 70.2 miles SSW of Warsaw
Skrzysz㳷 50ⰰ4' 21ⰳ3' 152.6 miles S of Warsaw
Skrzysz㳷 49ⰵ9' 21ⰰ5' 156.5 miles S of Warsaw
Skrzysz㳷 49ⰵ7' 18ⰳ0' 192.2 miles SW of Warsaw

There are NO hits in Austria, but most likely this town is in present-day Poland. The results will list latitude/longitude and distance from Warsaw. A great feature is that you can click on the "maps" to see where each town is located and the towns nearby. Also, you can click to see a list of towns w/in a 10 mile radius. What you don't want to do is start researching a town w/o knowing if it is 'yours'. This could take you off course and you may ignore other locations and go down the wrong path.

Many of my relatives arrived to NY from southeasternPoland(Galicia), but at the time of their arrivals the ship manifests state Austria. So, my advice is to keep Poland on the top of your list for the moment.

If your father is alive or one of his relatives, they may be able to remember a couple of the nearby towns or the larger town in the area. Those clues can guide you to the proper one.

As for online birth info., there is a huge online database via JRI-Poland (over a million records), which is also on the JewishGen website, BUT these are just Jewish records.

You may have to work through a parish church to find further info. I am not familiar with how to do that but there is an online Yahoo!Group called "Polish Genius" and others.

Have you located your grandmother's ship manifest? If not, if you go to: http://stevemorse.org you can try to locate her ship manifest there. Something on it might provide more clues for you.

For what it is worth as far as birthdays go, my dad seems to have had 3!!!! The one he always thought was his birthday, the one that is in the Polish Vital Records Book and the one my grandfather used when listing his children on his naturalization papers. I don't think that birthdays were necessarily that important to people in the late 19th and early 20th century.

Good luck...
