Any french or italian people please help?

My friend has never met her dad and we have searched on the internet to find out which country her dad may be from by his surname, His surname is Dastagnan and i sugessted it may be a french name however when i searched on the internet the name ould be spelled diferently if it was a french name so we came up with the idea it may be italian, has anyone heard of this name, can anyone help?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: It's French. It may be spelled phonetically in records (esp. US census when looking for ancestors), so try spelling's of "Dastanya" etc.
