Are there a ton of people with the last name of "Whitman" in Michigan? Is that a very very common name there?

It is almost always a surprise, when people first start research and find their name is far more common than they thought. One friendly tip is that not everyone with the same name is going to be related to you.
I'd encourage you to take a quick look at some of the beginning research guides (ie one of these is on the main page at www.rootsweb.com), and start collecting info about your immediate family.
Another place to chat is the Whitman section over at www.genforum.com (I might have that typed wrong). Use the search box and try Michigan. Keep in mind that for the most part, online info is (and should be) limited to ancestors who are dead, and thus not at risk of things like id theft.
