Can someone explain how to determine mtdna haplogroups?

my dad had an mtDNA test recently but we cant figure out how to determine the haplogroup..... help!

I know that Wikipedia is not necessarily reliable, but perhaps the explanation there will make some sense to you??? (haplogroups)
