Question:

Ancestors...?

Can anyone give me a website's url that is free, no need to sign up, and finds who my ancestors are and their story?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Rootsweb and FamilySearch.org are free.
However, information found in family trees in any website must be taken as clues not as fact as most of the information is not documented. Even if you see the same information over and over by different submitters, a lot of copying is being done.
There are errors.

You might and might not find your family history.

Ancestry.Com does require a subscription but they have lots of records and are obtaining more all the time.

Websites should be viewed as a supplement to real family research. You should start by
getting as much information from your family as possible, particularly your senior members. Even when their minds are a little feeble they can have a wealth of information. Tape them if they will let you. People who do that say if they go back a few years after doing research they hear things they didn't hear the first time around.
What might seem to be insignifcant ramblings turn out to be very important.

Start with your parents and go backwards. Work on one family line and if you run into a brickwall, put it aside and work on another.

Death certificates, application for social security numbers have names and place of birth of both parents including the mother's maiden name.

There are census records available through 1930. Ancestry.Com has them all and has transcribed all of them. Some of the transcriptions leave a lot to be desired but they are looking at handwritings that sometime are hard to read. You can view the census images if you wish. Starting with 1850 all family members were enumerated.

You might have a genealogical library or a genealogical section of your local library that has Ancestry.Com.

A LDS data center (Mormon Church) has a lot of information and they are very helpful.
I have not had any come ringing my doorbell because I have availed myself of their services.

Courthouse records, Church records are sources of information.

There are message boards on Rootsweb and when you post one on it, it will show up on Ancestry.Com's message boards. You can go under a surname or a location.

However, what is important to realize is that not everyone with the same surname comes from the same root.

Good luck! You will be getting some more good ideas.
