Question:

What is a good geneology software to use to build a family tree?

Must be Macintosh compatible! Ability to add personal notes and histories, photos, sound clips, videos, etc. Thanks!

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: There are many popular brands. I've only ever used the free one from ancestry.com, Ancestry Family Tree works well for me.

I work backwards -- my 'main gedcom' is always the online one and I occasionally backup to my computer. I can never suffer loss from hard drive failure or natural or other disasters because my data's stored on ancestry's servers. You can do the same with whatever software you choose.

BTW there is a popular myth that one cannot use ancestry.com without paying but that is not true. What is true is that yes, most of ancestry.com is subscription only but not all - sign up for the free stuff with just a name & password. You have free access to the public trees, message boards, SSDI, 1880 census, and various other resources.
