How do I get birth and death records of my mom.?

I know her name and the city and state she died in. I've tried all those genealogy sites and nothing came through. She passed away in nyc so what and where is the cheapest way of doing this aside from hiring a private investigator.

You will need to know when and where your mother was born to get her birth record, unless the death record tells you that.
