Question:

How can I trace my family tree for free?

for both my mother and my father

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Free - around your family kitchen table. Learn all you can from your elders about their parents and grandparents as far back as anyone recalls. You'll need full named, dates and places of births, marriages and deaths. From there you document those 20th century events and will learn even more about the parents of each.

Those are basics, although you didn't say what country you're from. The next "free" stop will be your taxpayer-funded public library, family cemeteries, and maybe the nearest LDS family history center. You will need access to census images at the very least.

At this point you should be ready to enter the 19th century online, try familysearch.org, ancestry.com, rootsweb.com, maybe find something at genforum.com.
