Duh...i realize that one has 2 a's....but is there some ancestrical difference? do any of you have these last names?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Generally speaking, when I run across names like this that are very similar, it's simply the spelling that is different. Since there's no "standardized" spelling for any last name, and since you can spell your name any way you like, names were changed pretty frequently. Census takers also wrote names in different ways depending on their own spelling ability, and probably how they "heard" a pronunciation. One of the family lines to which I trace is "Dabney;" if you go back a couple of generations, you see "Daubney," and finally if you go back far enough, you'll see the name as "D'Aubigney" and "D'Aubigne." The French name ("D'Aubigne") simply got transliterated, and then the vowels changed over time, but it's all still the same family.

According to Ancestry.com, here's a little information on the surname Vaughan:

Vaughan
Welsh: from "fychan", a lenited form of "bychan", a diminutive of "bach," meaning ??little??. This was often used to distinguish the younger of two bearers of the same personal name, typically the son of a father with the same name.
