Does anyone know what scottish clan the scoville family (also sometimes spelled as scovill) is part of?

One absolute basic in family history involves documentation of where YOUR OWN ancestors come from. It can be a complete surprise to find that everyone with a certain last name IS NOT related (thus, there is probably not one Scoville "family, but many).
I'd place a huge wager that everyone here who has experience in research, has run into the exact same issue, when starting out... family tradition shows so-and-so was a certain heritage, but when the records were searched, they turned out to come from somewhere else entirely.
Not to anger or insult you.. but do you have documentation as to the exact country that your Scoville ancestor immigrated from? The only way of having that is by having researched back from yourself, and made sure that you independently confirmed all the information.
Per the above (and a qucik check of other resources) the direction I get, is that it is an English name. You MIGHT be bumping your head on a brick wall, if you are looking for a "fact" that isn't supported by other records.
