Question:

Does anyone know what a white worker was back in 1841?

When researching family in the 1841 census I came across an occupation " whiteworker" this person lived and worked in the Derby area. I am just wondering if it had anything to do with Lime Pits, or if there were any in that particular part of the Country.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: I also have ancestors from Derby who described themselves as Whitesmiths. These were people who worked with white or light coloured metals (such as tin), and who did finishing work, such as filing and/or polishing on iron to remove black oxides. They worked mostly on cold metal.
