Question:

Looking For Sedor Family Info?

I am compiling my family tree and am seeking info on Sedor family from Manitoba, Canada. There were a family of nine siblings. Known ones are Steve (who died in a plane crash in Manitoba in 1960 with his son Walter who survived, as well as Ken Harrison who died) Brothers to Steve were Alick (Alec) who moved to Ontario after the war, and Mike, others as well but am unsure of their names. There was also a sister, Mary. Steve was a zinc miner for many years, in a wheelchair for two years after a work related accident which crushed both legs. I'd like to find as much info as I can. Ancestry.com is slow, but I'm waiting. does anyone out there have info that might be helpful?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: There are different schools of thought on what defines a family "tree". For some, it is going back to a gr gr grandparent, and locating all their descendents. On the other hand, many people work "back" to find only their direct line, and ignore the siblings. Ignoring siblings can block out a tremendous opportunity for information (like a distant cousin who may have the family Bible). I encourage people to find a balance if possible.
The issue with finding descendents is that recent info is normally restricted, for privacy reasons. When I say "recent", I broadly define that as the last 50-100 years. I suspect from what you mention that these are relatively recent persons. They are less likely to be in ancestry (although I don't use that, so don't quote me there). I did a quick check at rootsweb, and find one file about one early Sedor group that may have immigrated from Austria. You may or may not tie into that file.

Here's a list of Manitoba resources... not certain which will be of help to you, maybe one will "jump" off the page. Sounds like you are still in your early stages, meaning finding persons who may still be living. That is always tough "over here"... you do need to find them and their info, at the same time as ethics keep from directly posting info on a public board. You might concentrate on obits for the parents involved, since it is one place that could include names of all 9 siblings. The Sedor family section at genforum is another good place where you have good odds of bumping into a living cousin who is also looking. I would also "scan" the entries at rootsweb. I found the one file by using Manitoba as a filter.. but many files don't include a location and get overlooked unless you spot a familiar name.
