Question:

What are some free websites to find people?? (not like ancestry.com) they always say free, but it never is!!?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Since you mention ancestry, I am going to assume you mean finding relatives, in order to do family history. Yes.. there are THOUSANDS of free sites where you can find records (and there is a difference between a record, and pre packaged family histories). When beginning research, everyone is working with RECENT relatives, without understanding that reputable genealogists don't post confidential information. The expectation is that you start by collecting "recent" info from immediate family, offline and with their consent. Laws also restrict access for such things as birth certificates to those having a legal reason to have them, and with good reason. DON'T expect to find your own birth certificate online.
There is a HUGE difference in saying "I am Mary Smith, where is my family history?" (which you probably won't find) to "I need the marriage date for my ancestor John Smith and Mary Jones who lived in Dallas in 1880". With the 2nd, many people will be able to direct you to Texas historical records (or Dallas county archives) to find it. The trick lies in knowing that your family history is made up of bits and pieces, and you are the one to find them, and TIE THEM together.
If you are talking about finding living persons (generally those in the prior 50-100 yrs), that is a completely different process.
IF you want an understanding of how many sites there are out there, stop by www.cyndislist.com.
The sites ARE out there... you just have to know how to use them.
