Question:

I am researching the surname Talmich...can anyone help?

This is my great-grandmother's surname, she was born in Colorado, U.S.. I have heard that the name originated in Hungary, any help is appreciated.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Based on census and immigration records, the name Talmich (of which Tolmich and Tolmiche are extremely common spelling variants you will find) is primarily of Austrian-Hungarian origin (you may want to review the history of Hungary for a better idea of what Austrian-Hungarian means in regards to cultural research). Looking at the Tolmich's of Colorado...many of them apparently came to Colorado from New Mexico and listed their parentage of Austrian origin (however - this does not mean they were not, in fact, of Hungarian origin - the census takers may have documented Austria because of the Austrian-Hungarian dual state that existed at the time).

That being said, as another answerer suggested, researching your family generation by generation will paint you the best picture of where you and the name comes from.
