I am researching the surname Elekes. I believe its Hungarian.?

I believe its Hungarian. Anyone else ever heard of it? or know where I can find more information on its origins? I am also looking for people in the U.S.A. with this last name. Any ideas where to search?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Based on early census and immigration records, the overwhelming majority of Elekes did list their place of origin as Hungary or Austria (Austria-Hungary was a dual state for quite some time, and there is much of a shared history....I would definitely recommend looking into the Austria-Hungary history for a better idea of what either an Austrian or Hungarian origin really means).

However, as others have suggested, tracing your ancestors back generation by generation will paint the best picture for ya. I would highly recommend Ancestry.com if you can afford the subscription, but www.usgenweb.com, www.cyndislist.com, and www.rootsweb.com are some pretty awesome free resources you can start with.
