Question:

How are Japanese kamons (family crests) passed on?

Does the son only inherit the father's kamon? Does the daughter inherit only the mother's kamon? Could a brother and sister each have a different kamon? My wife has her mother's our family kamon and I have my father's. I thought that kamons are passed from father to son and mother to daughter. Could someone confirm this or correct me on this?
