Question:

Is my great grandmother last name Rose?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Hi,
I answered your other question about Forest Hill and yes, his mothers maiden name was Nancy J. Rose. I did a little searching and I believe that even though Forest Hill's death certificate says that his father was Benton B Hill, he may actually be Shelton B Hill. I say this for a few reasons.

According to Forest Hill's death certificate, he was born in Wellsville, Missouri. Wellsville is located in Montgomery County, Missouri. In the 1880 census in Montgomery County, Missouri, I found the following:

Name Relation Marital Status Gender Race Age Birthplace Occupation Father's Birthplace Mother's Birthplace
Shelton B. HILL Self M Male W 38 MO Farmer VA KY
Nancy J. HILL Wife M Female W 31 OH Keeping House OH ENG
William J. HILL Son S Male W 9 MO MO OH
Forrest HILL Son S Male W 4 MO MO OH
Annie J. HILL Dau S Female W 1 MO MO OH
William P. HILL Father W Male W 73 VA VA VA

From this information you can see that Shelton had a wife named Nancy and a son named Forrest born in the right time frame to be your Forest. Furthermore, the fact that his wifes name is Nancy lines up with the death certificate I provided you. Now, if Nancy's initial is really "J" then it is likely that her maiden name was Nancy J. Rose.

Also, if this is in fact the family you are looking for, you will see that Shelton's father is named William Hill, giving you one more generation backward.

One more thing, I found a Bailey Hill in Prairie Montgomery County, Missouri in the 1870 census working as a farm laborer. His age lines up perfectly with Shelton B Hill which leads me to believe that his full name was Shelton Bailey Hill rather than Benton B Hill as on Forest's death certificate. The information on the death certificate is only as good as the informant giving it. Bailey would be perfectly logical since you mentioned that Forest's son had the middle name Bailey.

Now, back to Nancy Rose...
I did find a Nancy J. Rose in Callaway County, Missouri who was born in Ohio around 1850. She may be a strong possibility as the wife of Shelton Bailey Hill

Source Citation: Year: 1870; Census Place: Auxvasse, Callaway, Missouri; Roll: M593_764; Page: 246; Image: 47.

Something else to point out...Montgomery County and Callaway County border eachother so the possibility is stong that this is our Nancy J. (Rose) Hill.

I know that this is a lot of information to sort out. If you would like copies of the censuses and such, please feel free to e-mail me via my profile. Take care.
