Question:

Where do you start with Family History if you have inherited many generations of pedigree charts?

Most websites tell you how to begin if you don't know your parents and grandparents etc. I have over 15 generations of pedigree charts with documented sources. Where do I start from here?
I have found some errors, but with so much history what should I do? just pouring over dates on microfilm is so boring for me?
Give me some ideas and where to go.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Whoever is doing their genealogy is always # 1. You are #1 on your list and if your child does their's, they become # 1. How lucky you are to have so much information at your fingertips already.

Buy Family Tree Maker and start entering the information, then you can set up your own charts and put your own book(s) together and the other paperwork you have can be put in another notebook(s) for documentation.

It can be very confusing at times but the challenge of working the "puzzle of life" is also very rewarding. I've spent hours and hours on the road going to various court houses, cemeteries, family homes, looking for things and compiling information. It's tiring but it's worth it as you see your tree grow and grow and see areas where your family has lived.

ie: My 5th-gr-grandfather built a house in 1795 and it is still standing and people still live in it. How wonderful to be able to go see it and the area he cleared and farmed and when he married in 1800, the area where he reared his children.

If you have to go thru microfilm or dig through books at a court house or walk through cemeteries, try to find someone to do it with you. I did mine with a couple of cousins, my gr-aunt and my grandmother and we had a ball traveling and finding things.

And get a good digital camera and try to go visit many of the older people and take pictures of pictures that they have and take pictures of markers in the cemeteries for your records/documentation. Be sure and write down any names/dates/locations for each picture so you can get them on your computer and print them up for your notebook and share them with others who may want some.
