Question:

How do I look to see if my Great Great Grandma was really Native American? More to question- read on please!?

First off, please forgive me if I ask a stupid question. I promise I am not intentionally wanting to come across as an idiot! :)

Ok, so I don't know much about my family. On my Dad's side, supposedly, my Great Great Grandma was Native American- how do I go about checking to see if that is true or not?

If it is true, does that mean I am of Native American decent? Legally, on say a job resume, should I put that I am Native American?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: There is actually a federal law that was enacted to protect Indian artist, it CAN be pushed to get people that are trying to claim Indian just for benefits. They check for tribal id and roll numbers. So until you actually get enrolled I'd leave it off.

As for finding out.
First you need a tribe to start with. Each tribe has their own requirements. The Mormon church has great records, they don't even try to convert you when you do the research. They do charge a copy fee but it's not much.
What ever the tribe, you will have to provide documentation of your lineage including a family tree, birth and death certificates. Along with the ancestors roll number.
