Question:

Do most people know that people in U.S. displaying coats of arms are not entitled to them?

Coats of arms were issued to individuals who passed them on to their sons. There are no laws n the U. S. regarding heraldry and there are companies that sell them based solely on a surname. Does everyone know that not everyone with the same surname comes from the same root? There was a time when people did not have surnames and they took the name of their occupation, habitation, or their name indicated they were the son of a person say for instance John. However, a lot of guys named John had sons. There were a lot of cooks, taylor, clerks(clarks) smiths and they were not all related. There were a lot of guys living on a hill, not just Sam. Do you know that many coats of arms have the same name? About 200 for Lewis. The companies that sell them will only have one for any name because they just need to sell the one to every gullible person that is looking for their "family crest," which is a misnomer for a coat of arms.

It does bother me that people are being taken in. Also if they are interested in their family history that they think the vague family histories that comes with the coat of arms is THEIR family history.
They actually might have one in their family tree but the one that they see displayed might not have anything to do with their family tree.

Search your family history. Start with your parents and work back one generation at a time. Work on one line and if you come to a brickwall, set it aside and work on another. If they were passed down from your grandparents, it is possible.

Katesmate: I am not telling people what to buy or what not to buy. However, they should know the deceit involved. If people are interested in finding their family histories, going by the family history that goes with a coat of arms with their surname is misleading. If anyone reports me for warning people, I can do some reporting on people who are quick to furnish a link to coats of arms peddlers
when someone just ask for an origin or meaning of a name.
I can't help but be suspicious that some people are in the employ of those peddlers. Yahoo answers should not be used that way.

I might add someone said answers like I give are boring. We are suppose to be giving information to people who are usually never on this board. Our purpose is not to entertain all the regular members of this board who might read our answers.

Some who seem to not like long boring answers to someone else's question, are the ones who get a fast 2 points by giving smart alec put down answers to some poor person whose question falls on this board and they don't feel it belongs here.
