I'm doing family history and I'm stuck because on both sides of my family I have no idea (and no one else in the family) what the maiden names of my great-grandmothers are. How can I find out? Also, how can I find out where in a particular country or region (as in French region/province) someone may have came from?

I'm doing family history and I'm stuck because on both sides of my mother's family I have no idea (and no one else in the family) what the maiden names of my great-grandmothers are. How can I find out? Also, how can I find out where in a particular country or region (as in French region/province) someone may have came from? My mother's maternal grandmother was born in Austria-Hungary in the late 1800s and my mother's paternal grandmother was born in t Ohio in the mid 1800s.
