Question:

What is the best free site to search for your ancestors?

additionally I believe I am at least 1/2 native american and if I can prove it how do I join a tribe???

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: As someone else already answered, if you believe one of your parents (or grandparents) is full Native American, you'll only need to prove you are his or her descendant, usually done by birth certificates - from the "target" person to you and everyone in between. Using someone else's "family tree" records isn't reliable. As to your question, there isn't a single, free "best" web site that does it all. Cyndi's List has a huge collection of sites, some free, some not, some helpful, some not. The only way to know is for you to check out each one.

Some of the best sites I've found (excluding city, county and state sites) have been genealogy organization sites, usually sponsored by the club or an individual. Don't rely on family tree postings from other people - only utilize transcripts of solid sources (ie birth, death, marriage, census records, wills, etc.). Not every locale has sites offering great info, but sometimes you get lucky. Usually I google "genealogy" and whatever county name and state I'm searching. Then I look for reputable organizations among the results. You can always check out LDS genealogy site (or local church). Everything they have is free (except for copying fees). After that...it's good old genealogy work: hunting, digging and reading tons of old docs... two steps forward and one back.
