Question:

Where does the last name Bowers originate??

I know that it is a German last name. It is also very popular, which seems almost impossible to properly learn about my ancestors.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: It is possible. I have a friend with that name who would like to find people in her father's family. Her father, Robert Bowers, was born in Maryland, moved to Alabama and died in Texas.

However, what she says is their name was originally spelled Bauers. The au in German is pronouced like the ow in English.

Wendy gave you some good advice. Names have a way of coming from many different places. The only way you can know is to trace your family back starting with your parents. Work one family line and if you come to a brickwall, set it aside and work another.

Now, since you have given a name, someone is likely to give you a link to a coat of arms peddler. There are no laws in the U.S. regarding heraldry and there are companies all over the internet that will sell you one based solely on a surname. That is not valid. Coats of arms were granted to individuals who pass them on to their sons.

As you probably know, not everyone with the same surname comes from the same root.
