You can do a lot of research on-line but the starting point needs to be direct information from your parents if you can.
You need to know the names of your four Grandparents, most parents will be able to let their children know this, unless there has been some problem in the past that has made this impossible, like a family break-up.
The starting point on-line for most of us is the 1881 Census. This is available free by going to the LDS website, and searching on the names of Grandparents.
If you have Grandparents that were born after 1881 and you do not have the names of the Great Grandparents, then you need to do some lateral thinking. You may now have to go and buy a book or magazine which will provide you with the best way forward at a minimum cost.
What you have to remember is that your family history is there for the picking, however you many well find that it is not easy without spending many hours thinking about it, and perhaps spending some cash to get the results you want.
